  • Oh bummer, I spoke too soon.
Seems the vacuum cap on #4 popped off, so that's what brought the idle down.
Still up at 2500 and steady.
    enough for today

    • So I'm back at the beginning.
What are all the possible causes for an engine to idle so high?
      Thanks.

      • You may benefit from a Color Tune spark plug.

        • Interesting idea.. It's either overly lean or slightly rich. Plug color would show which.

          • I have a color tune plug, but they ain't so easy to use, and they can melt if you run the engine more than 3 minutes.
I have a few things to try.
Because the idle's been consistently high no matter what, I have to go back to the intake pipes and work on those.

            • Do you have a full exhaust system yet or just the headers mounted with out the mufflers ?
              EDIT:
I would do a cold start with the color tune to establish a base line.
Then remove the color tune and warm the engine, install the color tune cold and grab a reading, then remove color tune to prevent melting.
Its about the best way to solve things in my opinion.
2nd EDIT: The 1100 engine runs on 89 octane. I had good cooling results with Berrymans "Total" Fuel System Cleaner which contains methanol/prevents over heating.

Also, I can't remember if you said you were using choke to cold start or not.

              • Yeah, your color tune procedure sounds right. Thing is that's for fine tuning after all the basic stuff is done.
I'm thinking about using cheap tricks like, gasket goop or silicone.
I can only get one cold start per day, first thing, so that was 3 times this weekend. Each time it needed full choke until warm.
Using a 1989 Katana 1100 exhaust system. I may mod that next year with smaller cans that mount higher.

                • I can't believe how well that fit. Now I'm thinking of mixing the Bandit 1200 header with a Pre-98 4-1 muffler on my Kat 1100. Speaking of which, I found a Bandit 1200 full exhaust locally for $50. I may get it or I may not...I've got other priorities at the moment. Plus its winter, so ????????????

                  • I'd snag that, even if I didn't use it. $100-150 easy.

                    • I might get it and sell it to Bill
I can't stop thinking about his muffler swap...wow, the peg relief is even in the correct spot. Not to thread hi jack, but does the factory post-98 4-1 exhaust swap to a pre-98 after changing the oil pan ? If it does, that would be a cheap alternative muffler mod. I'm loving this thread !

                        • Nope, never noticed that. Funny part is I just got done searching a bunch of old threads. I spent about a half hour or more reading information I didn't need when I should have just checked the stickies. I did notice your other thread talking about the 1100 exhaust being the same diameter as your 750. Thats the only good thing I gathered from it all. I'm going to hush now and let some other people bother you...lol

                            • When you pulled the carbs, did you bench synch them first?

The bench sync basically puts the carbs back to neutral, and then the sync with the stick adjusts it to the motor. It's possible that if they were adjusted to another motor previously one or more of the carbs may be wildly different.
