When I first joined the Army they tried to get me with the summer air/winter air bit, but as I was walking to the motorpool I thought about it, and as I stopped to turn around I heard someone trying to stifle a laugh. I did end up getting run around for about 10 minutes looking for something, I think I fell for the "frequency grease" bit.

We'd send 'em over to the comm depot for cans of spray squelch to help improve radio reception.
The list was virtually never-ending, and usually reserved for whatever person was most needlessly consuming our air resources
We even sent people off on full-day and two-day missions to recover a case of "Top Secret" paper, a paper that supposedly looked/felt/handled just like regular paper, but burned more readily in case of need for emergency destruction (usually with some sob story about how someone who just left the unit had accidentally burned our year's supply with a clumsy cigarette, and since it was a controlled substance, we couldn't just order more -- the only place to get it was such-and-such base from this-and-that-person who was willing to give us his excess "off the books").

They were generally reserved for the stupidest of troops, just to keep them out from being under-foot while real work was being accomplished.
