  • One of the early adopters! (Hello!)

    Hello out there!

I just stumbled across your forumn and I just had to join. I have been riding for a long time and I bought my Black GSX1100F new back in 89! It took mw around the country quite well and I put 25,000 miles on it the first summer I owned it. That was on one summer long cross country trip!

After I moved to Colorado, my riding time decreased as I was both living high in the rockies where snow shortens the riding season to just just 4 or 5 months, and a job that required me to carry to much large tools to be able to use the kat.

Then I also had a Nighthawk 650 and a R1100GS to share the riding duties, so my kat sat for quite a few years. Eventually, I sold the Nighthawk and 2 years ago I was in an accident that killed the GS. So the kat was pressed back into service.

I would not mind a newer, lighter bike, but when I check bikes out, I usually stick with the old kat. They just do not make sport tourers like they used to. Something that has a decent fairing for up here in the mountains, where my morning commute temps can be sub 20 degrees, early and late in the season. And are still comfortable enough to drive a few hours to the city on occasion. Plus getting good gas mileage is always a plus. I still might end up with a F800GS or maybe a Tiger 900XC down the road, but if I do I will probally still keep the kat.

                        Thanks for the welcome!

I am doing a busy maintenance this weekend to get ready for the tourist season up here. I have not adjusted the valves in 50K miles and my power has been down. So I first task was to pull the carbs and disassemble them for cleaning. I expected some clogged jets but they were all clean. So I moved on to the valves where I found every valve was tight. So now they are adjusted I expect my power will be back and maybe better mileage to boot! Next I have to reassemble everything and balance the carbs just to rule out a problem there. Then if I still have time I am going to install a pair of relays so I can run a 100w/80w bulb in the headlight.

Time for a pic! This was a day I was taking a lot of stuff to work. Normally I do not use the bags unless I travel, but they do come in handy if I feel like taking a spring ski day!
