Hello, I am the proud third owner of a 1999, black 600 (16500 miles). This is my first bike purchase, though I have ridden internittently.
When I got her, she had been sitting for 9 months, the last owner said he put stabil in the fuel (she still has the old fuel in her).
When I got her/tested her, she ran good, a little rough, but good with lots of torque. I got it in the morning and then rode it maybe 5 miles, short trips and bursts (you know, first bike purchase). I then parked her. When I started her after 4 hours, here's what was happening:
1. the choke (?) is getting stuck at 4000 RPM (if it drops lower, and you rev her up, it gets stuck at 4000). The owner said that he had this problem once last year, he wiggled the choke cable/wire around and got it fixed).
2. It is running rough and sounds 'rattly'.
3. So I parked her. The next morning (today), I started her without the choke (revving through the throttle) and she started after two presses of the started, only to run a few seconds and die, but came on again without much effort. Had to get to work so did not tinker with her any further.
So I called the last owner and was told that the carbs have not been cleaned and the valves have not been adjusted in over two years.
Oh, and to top my woes, I dropped her yesterday (the throttle was stuck at 4000 RPM, and trying to kick out the stand, I accidently hit the gear shift and let go of clutch...............you can imagine what happened! So now, I have fairing scratches to take care of).
Any suggestions on next steps would be greatly appreciated (how to get her running smooth and taking care of the throttle issue). All in all, I love this bike!
PS: Not sure if I have given enough information to diagnose the problem, so please let me know and I will post what I can.
