  • Hello from new owner with new problems

Hello, I am the proud third owner of a 1999, black 600 (16500 miles). This is my first bike purchase, though I have ridden internittently.

When I got her, she had been sitting for 9 months, the last owner said he put stabil in the fuel (she still has the old fuel in her).

When I got her/tested her, she ran good, a little rough, but good with lots of torque. I got it in the morning and then rode it maybe 5 miles, short trips and bursts (you know, first bike purchase). I then parked her. When I started her after 4 hours, here's what was happening:

    1. the choke (?) is getting stuck at 4000 RPM (if it drops lower, and you rev her up, it gets stuck at 4000). The owner said that he had this problem once last year, he wiggled the choke cable/wire around and got it fixed).

    2. It is running rough and sounds 'rattly'.

    3. So I parked her. The next morning (today), I started her without the choke (revving through the throttle) and she started after two presses of the started, only to run a few seconds and die, but came on again without much effort. Had to get to work so did not tinker with her any further.

So I called the last owner and was told that the carbs have not been cleaned and the valves have not been adjusted in over two years.

Oh, and to top my woes, I dropped her yesterday (the throttle was stuck at 4000 RPM, and trying to kick out the stand, I accidently hit the gear shift and let go of clutch...............you can imagine what happened! So now, I have fairing scratches to take care of).

Any suggestions on next steps would be greatly appreciated (how to get her running smooth and taking care of the throttle issue). All in all, I love this bike!

PS: Not sure if I have given enough information to diagnose the problem, so please let me know and I will post what I can.

Welcome to KatRidersfrom another noob! Man just surf around for a while, there's complete repair manuals in pdf, posts showing carb overhaul/synching/idle drop procedures step-by-step (WITH PICS!), valve adjustment procedures step-by-step (WITH PICS!). Check it out!

For the bodywork there are about a jillion posts showing people's handiwork and how they did it. If that doesn't suit you, check out Street Fighters forum, maybe that's for you!

Hope you get it straightened out and again, Welcome!

Choke cables can rub under the tank (more often on 98+??) and stick.
But you may also need a carb cleaning.
                    2. It is running rough and sounds 'rattly'.
Still could be the carbs. Unbalanced carbs can make the bike sound like it's falling apart. You could also be only running on 3 cylinders.
                    3. So I parked her. How did it run on the way to work?

                    Bingo!

                    I hate to say it but;
First step is to clean up the carbs. This is a tricky process of you haven't worked on something like them before. While there are only about 20 parts per carb some are plastic and expensive (floats), some might fall apart in your hands (float valve tips), some might roll away never to be seen again (FA screw parts). If you take your time and set up a good work space you should be OK.
Here is the official KR rebuild thread:
Can't get it to run right? Find a trick to add HP?
From the first oil change to completely rebuilding the engine,
this is the place to talk about the heart of the beast!

I would like to add a few tips:
                    1. have a good surface to work on. Gas will spill no matter how careful you are so what I do is place several layers of cardboard down on my bench.
                    2. Use something to keep parts sorted. I use yogurt containers. All the parts from Carb 1 go in a cup labeled #1.
                    3. Try to set up something to keep parts from rolling of the bench. That sucks!
                    4. Wear safety glasses when spraying carb cleaner. It could either splash back at you or fly out a port that is aimed at your face.
                    5. Just to be safe have the rebuild kit. They are pricey, about $25 per carb (don't go to the dealer, they will charge you for the floats. Some $80 each ($240 total!!). There is only a 2% chance you need new floats. Nothing would be worse then to find a missing o-ring or one that is damaged and not have it!
A forum filled with write-ups, FAQ's, and visual aids for
mechanical & cosmetic modifications to your Katana.

                    6. The FA screws need to come out. You cannot clean the carbs with out this step! Remember the order: The spring, the washer the o-ring!
                    7. I use coffee cans to support the carbs. The bowls or tops fit in the can and the edge of the can fits at the rail. This gives you firm footing for getting the bowl or top screws off without bearing down on the carb itself.

After rebuilding the carbs the next step is adjusting the valves. Again take your time and this should be easy!

                    Finally synch the carbs, use a home made unit (there are a few instructions here) or if the bike is running ok take it to a shop. But you have to do things in this order;
                    1 rebuild/clean
                    2 valves
                    3 synch.

                    Good luck and welcome!
