I painted my wheels back in March. I used the DupliColor Wheel paint to get rid of the purple. I stripped them first with airplane stripper and then sanded them. The paint seems to be holding up quite well.
I used one coat of primer and two coats of color then two - three coats of clear.
I have since stripped the passenger grab-bar as well but these pictures are from March right after I painted the wheels. So there is now no more purple anywhere on the bike.
