Took it out for a ride this morning. It's 38 degrees out and I let it warm up for about 20 min before I took it out. Every time I would slow down to stop the bike would just shut off. Any ideas what would cause this?

little more information might be helpfull. start with year, size, milage. better discription of "dying" also. spit sputter and die, instant shut off, etc. did it start again right away? how well did it spin over? quick, slow, hesitant? how about gas level, petcock setting, yada yada yada. your one symptom is WAY too vague to start guessing99% of the questions asked here can be answered by a 2 minute search in the service manual. check your kickstand safety switch. downshifting may be moving it and/or the kickstand enough to cut the circut. what's your idle set at, and is it rock steady? how about when you DONT downshift till after you stop, just clutch in and brakes.Last edited by DumbLuck; 12-21-2008, 02:12 PM.99% of the questions asked here can be answered by a 2 minute search in the service manual. Turn the idle up. Warm idle for that bike should be 1200 - 1300 RPM.

Warm bike = 1.2K RPM. Also, is your choke all the way off when you're underway and the bike is warm? Even if it's on just a smidge, that could cause the problem I think you're having (a bike that refuses to hold an idle)."Men will get no more out of life than they put into it."

(A) Throttle cables set too tightly or binding -- easy to test: if the RPM's climb as you turn the steering from the left to the right, this is the culprit.
(B) Vacuum leak, typically before the carbs (airbox drain hose is often overlooked, for example).
(C) Carbs gummed up or clogged with debris, esp. in the smaller passages, so it increases the vacuum to try to find a steady-state (and climbs idle in the process).
Reset the idle and then tackle the other problem with the help of those here on KR.
