I lowsided last summer doing something stupid learned my lesson I was ok though
but had to get my side fairings repainted and belly pan eventough it cost some $$$$$

First things first: new helmet. Before you fix the bike. Seriously.

I'm not sure how much the tires played into it -- loose sand is always a hazard no matter how good your tires are, and a panic reaction doesn't improve that (sounds like you had one).

Glad to see you're alright in the bigger scheme of things.
