  • What work should be done on a used kat

    I recently purchased a 2001 katana 750.
It has about 6500 miles on it. I dont know if the previous owner kept up
with all the scheduled work that needed to be done to the bike.
What do you think i should do b4 the summer comes.

Also sometimes it will idle around 3000 rpm in stop and go riding, what may be causing this?

    (A) Fuel system treatment with techron to start.
    (B) Check dates on tires -- if imprint dates are 5 years old, replace with Metzeler Z6's.
    (C) Replace brake lines, brake fluids.
    (D) Valve adjustment, spark plug, oil & oil filter change - just do it.
    (E) Inspect chain, adjust, lube, replace if necessasry.

As for the high-RPM idle, either:
    (1) The bike sat too long without running, and some of the carb passsages are partially blocked with fuel residues (item A above should take care of that in 1 to 2 tanks), OR
    (2) It does it only when the wheel is rotated to the right, in which case the throttle cables are misadjusted, OR
    (3) You let the bike overheat (RPM's didn't drop again until after the bike had been shut off and cooled down) -- if so, replace the oil and stop letting idle for that long in stop-n-go traffic...

      Use only Chevron or Texaco
      Change tires
      Replace brake fluids.
      Replace/check spark plugs
      Change oil and filter
Inspect chain, adjust, lube, replace if needed.
Adjust ALL cables by the book.

      Then ride it.

      Was it kept inside?

I bought my first Kat in 1991, brand new, a red 600. No pics though.

Replace fuel lines and fuel filter. Should replace fuel lines after 4 years of use.

My idle was very high like that too at a stop light or sign. A simple Adjusting to the idle took care of mine after I used techtron and replaced the air filter and oil. Make sure you completely warm the bike before adjusting.

And if you are lucky like I have been with my Kat. When you do the valve adjust ment you wont have to adjust them at all cause they will be right on. And as always CP gave you a lot of the main things to do

              Good luck

Ok today i put seafoam in my fuel and it runs smoother. I also adjusted the idle after it was fully warmed up and it doesnt rev so high anymore. Im getting the carbs synced nxt week and maybe the valves too. Ill give an update after this is done.
