I haven't pulled the filter off yet, (all my spare time is devoted to a bathroom re-tile right now) but the drain bolt is still screwed all the way in. (That was my first thought on the side of the road.) The front of my engine (from the filter down and mostly on the right side) and the lower part of the header were coated pretty well with oil.

I'm about 99% it was the filter seal. I suppose it could have been an oil cooler line or fitting though I wouldn't think that would be as likely as the seal.

Aw man, I just called a buddy of mine who was riding behind me when that happened. He answered the phone with, "What's happening, Slick?"

I already gave him a title... no plans to change his sign in name on him.

I plan to get after the bike this weekend. I'm itching to ride again and the weather looks good!

I finally had a chance today to look at the Kat a little closer. Well, it turns out that one of the bolts going through the Banjo fitting where the oil cooler lines enter the engine backed out. This was the source of my wild ride.

The filter was still fine, but that bolt had backed out quite a bit, it was visibly loose (after the filter was out of the way). I removed the oil cooler to drain it when I changed the oil a few weeks ago. I undid the fittings at the top of the oil cooler. I can only assume that the slight movement loosened the bolt at the bottom of the line. I torqued them both down and I'm ready to go.

SO....If you remove your oil cooler, check the bolts at the banjo fittings at the bottom of the lines when you reassemble!

i am curently having some sort of oil leak issue myself,
i just did an oil change and put my scotts filter form my old kat to my new one and i keep smelling burning oil for days now , i finaly checked the bottom fairing and look at the filter , now when i put the filter on it didnt seem to fit as snug on the new bike like it did the old. but i cant see oil driping from under the filter it looks like its all wet on the oil line next to it at the bolt your talking about. i dread taking it all apart and undooing my oil filter as i just put in mobil sythetic.
                              guess i better though....

Torque wrenches are your friends . And make sure there's a copper washer on BOTH sides of the line , too .
