  • Chain/Sprocket replacement...how tough?

I need to replace the chain and sprocket on my stock 1989 1100 Kat. I am reasonably mechanically inclined but this is more than I've done so far. Is this something a self-taught wrencher can do in an afternoon? Also any ideas where I can source these parts? I want to keep things stock. Is there a better place then the dealer for these parts? Any links to tutorials or personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A self taught wrencher can do this in 30minutes to an hour. Theres a how to in the how to section I believe. Many different places to source parts. Steves sells sprockets through the KR store on the top menu bar, Don't think he sells chains anymore, but they are easy enough to find.

It's pretty straight forward.. you will need a chain riveting tool to put the new chain together. there is a sticky for this subject...

Just remember to loosen the bolts on the sprockets prior to taking the chain off. It's much easier to get them loose that way.

I did Mine today and read the post last night so I did as you suggested and loosened everything first. I think it may have been a nightmare if I hadn't. I had to use a small two legged puller to get the front Spocket loosened but then smooth sailing.

took me about an hour but I wasn't in any hurry coffee, smoke break lol it's not hard at all really

          Thanks for the tip

you need more than just a chain riveting tool , you also need an angle grinder or even better a dremel tool for cutting the chain. but if youre self taught its going to be ok

Getting your hands on a rivet tool is the trick. But if you can get one it's a breeze. I was able to borrow one for #50 industrial chain from a millwright at work(I Cut it with a zip wheel and a grinder) It worked fine on the 530 chain they have the same dimensions I think the o rings are the only difference. I think lol. All i know is it worked lol
