+1000000 on the spandex or boxer briefs at the least. My boys were very sore with boxers initially. I switched to wearing nylon "slider" shorts for playing softball (no pun intended) which are essentially padded spandex and my boys have never been happier!!!

Try it, any sporting goods store carries them.
