Just make sure the balaclava ain't too thick . The cheaper fleece ones don't do so well under a FF helmet . There are thinner ones (silk ) that supposedly work better . I keep mine rolled down around my neck only , not over my whole head .

Good :
Windbreaking layer on top , neck protection of ANY kind helps tremendously be it balaclava , scarf (flaps and comes undone , though ) , or bandana , stout gloves (good thick leather works wonders) , wool socks , long johns .
Bad :
Any regular winter glove (will slip RIGHT off and is too bulky to work controls well) , ANY exposed skin , and not using most of the stuff above .
