Sounds like a bad plan to me. If he is killing CDI's with a bad coil this will kill another one just on the 1&4 side. I'd replace the 2&3 coil with a known good unit. If that is not available I'd replace it with a new stock unit.

If it was the cdi I highly doubt you would have ANY spark. CDI works on the ignition system as a whole unit, it does not know the difference between cylinders. If it was me I would start by swapping the coils and see if the 2&3 that doesnt have spark now does by switching. If it does, it's not the coil. Next try the pick -up coils under the right side crank cover. They may have just gotten rusty on the little metal pieces. Next has to be a bad wire or connection.
