Here's what I did:
-I went to NAPA and bought myself a 14 x 1.5 Piggyback self-cutting style drain plug.
-I grabbed my trusty tap, put some grease on the end of it and slowly started making my new threads making sure to take out the tap to clean it off and reapply grease.
-After this I used high temp loctite on the main bolt, tightened it down to 17.5 ft lbs and it no longer leaks!
The tap tracked straight and true allowing the bolt to seat nice and flush up against the pan. I used some of the cheap oil I had laying around, flushed the system several times and voila! No more leaks and from what I can tell, no metal shavings!
So for $4.75 I saved the headache of attempting to take the exhaust off and hopefully it will get me through this season!
