Engine vin decoder

I've found a few engine vin decoders but I'm really missing something.
can someone tell me the year of my engine?

First, that's not a V.I.N. Second, you can't tell the year by the engine code, just the series. That is the 5th development version of an inline four cylinder 599cc.

If it is black it is a pre (88-97) 600, if it is silver/gray it is a post (98-06) 600

It's a pre no doubt probably an 89 or 90. Than again, I don't know how many different development versions of the Katana 600 they had. They had quite a few with the GSXR 750. Okay, if they just do a different development version when they change something, there would only be 5 version. So that engine could be an 06.

interesting. Is there a way to tell if it's in the right frame? I.e orignal? It's in a 97 rate now and it's a pre black.

Not that I know of.

You wouldn't really be able to tell if a 97 600 katana had a replacement pre 600 put in. But it wouldn't matter anyways.

Cool works for me, my norm is older yamaha xs650's so everything is labeled and needed to be know when buying parts. glad to hear it sounds about right. Thanks again

I could narrow it down to 96-97. It's black so it's a pre 98. What spark plugs are in it? If they are C series NGK plugs, it's a 96-97. If they are D series it's 88-95. Beyond that narrowing down the years gets harder.

I was thinking of picking up iridium plugs are they worth it?

Do you take a lot of real short trips? The kind that the engine doesn't even get to full operating temp? If not, then no.

Well here in Vermont there is no such thing as a short trip, but I'm heading to RI and figured the city riding would make them worth it. I can ride them for long trips without problems right?

Yea you can use them for long trips. But personally I wouldn't waste money on them.
