  • Have to prime before start

This is my first motorcycle, and after searching through past posts, I have not found an answer to why I am having trouble starting it.

When I try to start it, it will crank without a problem, but not even one cylinder ignites. Also, the exhaust doesn't smell like fuel. So, I tried priming it, and it worked, but I had to prime it every time I started it when the engine was cold. After letting it sit for a week, even with priming it it is difficult to start.

I was told that the fuel filter was replaced last year, but I am not certain that it was. I didn't know if the petcock or something wrong with the carbs would cause that. I'm just looking for some tips before I start replacing things and hope it works.
    Thanks.

I would say your float bowls are leaking. Fuel filter is an easy and cheap fix, so try that to. Check for leaks around your float bowls.

I'll do that. Also, I forgot to mention that after it starts, it runs great. Doesn't seem to be lean or rich. I found that a little odd.

Check to see if it runs on reserve. If it does I would check the petcock to see if anything is stuck.

I took it for a ride today, and it started up without a problem. I haven't done anything to try and fix it yet. I have never checked out a petcock before, but I'll add that to one of my projects over the winter along with checking my carbs. Thanks for the help.
