pre is from 88-97 and post is from 98-06. what kindve answer you looking for? they are painted different colors. is there any specific reason to ask or just because? if you want to really get into it you can talk bout the differences for hours, but at the same time they aren't all too different.

        The color.

Well, on the 600's the heads were different some years.

        Otherwise they are the same.

98+ adds TPS to the carbs but that doesn't effect the motor.

I was just wondering because there are plenty of engine parts for pres and not so much for post and was wondering if they were interchangeable

Usually you can compare part #s between years to see if they are actually the same thing on a site like http://cheapcycleparts.com/ , http://www.ronayers.com/ , http://www.bikebandit.com/

The exterior parts (e.g. case covers) have different part #s just due to the color difference (pre: black, post: silver), but they are the same sizes and the bolt holes should all match up.

for all intents and purposes, they are the same engine... theres a few small differences, but you can change a pre with a post, and not have any problems at all
