Hello, So today I got the bike mostly back together. Just missing main fairings.
When I pulled off it seemed sluggish, as I went thru the gears it felt like the brakes where dragging. I go a few blocks and when i pull off from the stop sign, it pops and stops (shuts off). So I get it running get back home, I thinking maybe the chain is too tight, so I readjust it. I realign the wheel, I loosen the front wheel and retorque it. So it rode a little better.

As I go thru the gears when I hit the crusing speed it feels like it has a little chug in it, I down shift, it feels a little better till I cruise.

Do you think it is the clutch? Poss need an adjustment?

    HELP!!!!
    Thanks...

Smitty, you don't specify how long the bike was apart for repairs, but first thing I would check is to make sure the gas is fresh. If I am understanding you correctly, she is bucking a bit in the higher gears, and when you downshift, she smoothes out? Sounds like a fuel delivery issue - get some seafoam or similar fuel system detergent, and add some to a full tank of fresh gas. Have you pulled the plugs to see if any are fouled? Keep us posted.

well, it was sitting about 2-3 months, It has fresh gas with 1/2 can of sea foam in it... but it does do it even when u down shift, when u level out ( constant rpm) like cruise at 30 mph...

it's still apart enough to check the plugs... I'll do that Monday evening..

Given that I know the history of the bike, it's probably due for:
        (A) Valve adjustment
        (B) fresh spark plugs

I'd also check the tank for rust & drain & clean the float bowls on the carbs.

I know that it was slipping the clutch a little 10k miles ago, but I don't remember whether he got it replaced or not... Still that wouldn't be responsible for chugging. What RPM is it chugging at?

        Cheers,

Needing the valve adjustment explains the sewing machine sound.
Used my tank, its clean. didnt check the carbs. Its only a bad chug when u 1st pull off. Then it smooths out till you cruise at 1 speed, more like a miss then a chug.
I guess about 3-4k RPMs. Where it chugs.
Anyone close to me wanna help me with my 1st valve adjustment???

          I'm in Port Charlotte, Fl....
          Thanks

The engine should be spinning at least 4k at all steady-cruise speeds -- below that, and you're lugging it.

ok, so I did the 4k test it not slippng. I adjust the clutch cable, rode a whole lot better. But it still not pulling off from a stop good. It also backfired when I did the test to see if the clutch was slipping.
I tested the exhaust and #3&4 are not as hot as #1&2, even after a 6 block ride. I'm going to pull the plugs and change them.

Cleaned the bike up and got all the grease off and it looks good...

                Hello all...
So I got home today, I got some carb cleaner and sprayed out the carbs, then took the semi new plugs out of the 600 and put them in the #3 & 4.. Wow bigg difference.. Lots of smoke from the cleaning, took it for a short 6-7 block ride (no tag yet) smoke cleared up and running smooth @ 1100rpm.. Now going to change the oil and put her back together...

                Thanks for all the info..
