  • Odd Running problem

If you look in my signature I've just gotten a 01 bandit and I swapped the engine with a Kat 600. I've got all it hooked up, oil and gas in it. I cranked it a few times and got it running.

The problem that I have is: when The choke is on, the engine is at 6000 rpm. When the choke is off its at 1000 RPM. As soon as I touch the throttle, whether the choke is on or off it shuts down.

    What could it be?

I was thinking the same thing. SOunds like it could be a fuel supply issue whether it is from tank to carbs or carb into air stream. Either is possible

I"d say more than a year ago.

Where is the best place to get that gauge set for carbs?

            Oh, I forgot one thing.

The bike was a california bike. I removed all the emission equipment, Would that cause this same problem?

The emissions crud is unlikely to cause a problem unless the hoses are rotted (cracked) or misrouted, or you failed to correct for the removal. The only thing you need in terms of additional hardware are the block-off port covers for the front of the engine (replaces the tubes coming out under each header pipe) plus a fresh length of vacuum tube to run from the number 4 carb to the petcock (eliminating the T-fitting that runs to the PAIR valve). If you have those things, the rest of the pollution system can be removed without penalty...

Which air filter, airbox, what jetting?

EDIT: Sans choke, the bike's idle for a Cali model should be set to 1250 cold to start with -- and should run about 1350 hot (adjust after getting up to temp). The fact that it was running at 1k implies that the idle was set too low, there's too little vacuum (filter issues or vacuum leak), or the fuel is crud.

              Cheers,

                The fuel is junk.

                Air Filter is new.

I think I know the line thats messing me up.

                Thanks guys.
