  • Bike shutting down while riding

My brother in law has a 2001 Katana and while he is riding it the thing just shuts down. Like yesterday we was on the interstate riding about 80mph, I noticed he slowed down, then he came flying by me. We pulled off for a sec. and I asked him what was that and he told me his bike shut off. I think it could be his plugs. Any opinions? He don't have alot of money to nickel and dime it. Has anyone had this problem?

yeah, sweetlou had this issue. He replaced the CDI box and that fixed it.

Side stand switch.. Loose spring causes the side stand to "bounce", especially on the highway. The switch cuts out the ingition.

        Obvious answers:
        (A) How low was his fuel? If he was close to reserve, he might have been sucking fumes with the petcock at "ON"
        (B) Sidestand switch
        (C) Fouled plugs
        (D) Bad electrics (the CDI issue Arsenic mentioned puts a ceiling on the RPM's at a specific level - can't get past a specific RPM).

        Cheers,

Yeah , the only way the plugs would cause the bike to shut down would be if they ALL fouled out at the same time . It'll still do 80 on 2 cylinders , trust me . Most likely is the sidestand spring/switch like BP suggested .
