  • Rear sets..

I have wanted new rear sets that would move my feet back about 2" and up about the same.. and yes, I have seen the 'after-market' ones.

I saw a thread about 'will pre-600 rear-sets fit a 750' and it got me thinking, I have a pre 600.. so i pulled them and pulled the left rear-set off my '91 750. Yes they fit.
Then I wondered if they were swapped left-to-right would they still fit.. the answer is yes... and it would move the foot peg just about where I want it too..
The down side is the foot peg will not fold and the shift lever and the brake arm are too far away. If I can get the splines broached I'll make my own arms and machine the bracket so the peg will fold back, or just make new brackets all together...
This just might be a new project..

Very interested brother, looking forward to how it turns out. May be interested in the same. Was thinking of rearsets similar to Mreed's, but after sitting on that beast I'm thinkin they may be set farther back than I would like after a long hard ride.

I think these will move my foot up and back just enough to be comfortable for me. Once I get them on I'll take measurements to see just how far they move.

Remember that if you make the shifter longer, you'll have a longer throw unless you also change some of the geometry between the two pieces. Brake arm shouldn't be too bad. Since I'm not a machinist or anything, how difficult are splines to make?

If the machinist has the broach to match the spline it will be fine. I'm also considering making a new bracket and adding the pegs I have from a zx7, the gear lever pivots on the foot peg and the brake arm would get 'shortened' in some way.

Well after messing around today I can't just switch sides cuz of where the brake pivot is...but the placement is great on peg..think I'm Gonna try to make mounts or cut the stockers & reweld

I had a chance to work with the pre-600 rear sets yesterday. The "flip" will work on the left side, but is off maybe 2-3 mm on the right because of the @#$%^ rear brake pivot shaft ( I'd like SLAP the engineer who thought that was a good idea to put it thru the frame )

Any way, I dimensioned the original unit and put it into autocad. I made some changes to the shape to get around the brake pivot shaft so that the basic shape of the new bracket will work for either side. I added the counter bore to accept the zx foot pegs. The left side will be easy, all I will need is a longer rod to the shift shaft as the shift lever pivots off the foot peg.

The right will be a bit trickier, its going to be a short link between the brake arm and the brake shaft. Unfortunately the tab on the zx brake arm is pointing the wrong direction for this application, a simple bracket welded to the arm will most likely be the answer.

Other than that, I'll be making them from 5/8" alum and using the stock isolation rubber inserts to dampen the vibes and retain the stock mounting bolts.

The nice part about this is that I can probably make any foot rest set work on this generic bracket because most modern bikes have the shift arm and brake arm pivot from the foot peg. I've looked at a few random gsxr, r1 and r6 rear sets of random years and they all seem to have the same mounting design. The only down side is that what ever brake arm is used the connection between the brake arm and the pivot will have to be fabricated.
