the front fairings yes, the 98-06 are interchangeable..however the tail fairings are different from 2003-2006.. 98-2002 are the same.

Nope...Except for the handlebars height and the 600/750 numbers, its pretty hard to tell them apart

You can fit the '03 - '06 rear fairings on the 98-02 models, but you will need a new style rear bulb support bracket and new style brake lens assembly.

                Cheers,

For some reason I remember somebody trying to use 2001 fairings on their 2003 Kat and had problems with the bolts lining up underneath. Cant remember for the life of me who it was though

750s have higher bars? Is there a reason/benefit?

The handlebars have a rubber vibration-isolating sheet under their risers that aren't on the 600's.
Benefit: less vibes at the handlebars, more upright seating position.
Cons: less direct steering (although few are apt to notice it), and for many riders, harder to go into as deep a tuck with the higher bars.

Since it's a rubber sheet, it should still be replaced about every 5th year to give you maximum benefit (just like all other rubber products, it'll harden up with time and loss of VOC's).

                        Cheers,
