  • What Are Your Sprocket Ratios? Suggestions?

If you are not familiar with sprocket ratios and how it changes your ride, this is a must read: http://www.motorcycleanchor.com/kata...sprockets.html

That being said, I'm still not sure what I want. I don't really care about top speed (a positive % change lowers top speed), but I definitely care about MPG (a positive % change lowers MPG). I wouldn't mind a little more acceleration (low-end torque), but it's definitely not necessary.

I believe my 03 600's sprocket count is stock, but at the very least I know the rear count is 47.

What's your sprocket count? What do you get for MPG? How much highway, city, and twisties? I do mostly highway, a little city, and less twisties (but I don't want to give up on doing them more!).

That looks very cool, but I have no idea how to answer most of those questions. Way above my head :/

primary drive ratio? rear tire width (I forget which number that is)? Chain pitch? Chain links - do I actually have to count each of them?

select your bike from the tabs at the top an most if not all the info you may need is there

it will tell you how your speed will change etc by changing a tooth on the sprocket

I guess there's probably no difference from the 98-01 Kat 600... but mine is 03 and it's not in the drop down list.

Where do you ride? What kind of enviroment.?

I'm in WNC. All my riding is 90% back roads, and the majority of them are curvy as hell.

I'm running a 15/50 setup, and love it. It's not as fun on the highways though.

On my 750 I have 15/47. Seems to be a good combination for in town use and occasional freeway blasts. For touring I'd try a 16 tooth front sprocket.

16 tooth front sprocket will have some fitment issues.

Northern VA - mostly highway, some city, less on backroads (although I wish it was more backroads!). I like to accelerate quickly, but I tend to keep a constant speed when I'm not constantly stopping and going in the city or traffic. I have no need to go fast, even on the highway, except to keep up with the flow of traffic.

I just don't want to lose acceleration and not be able to get away from a bad situation with a small flick of the wrist. Or even just accelerating to pull away from all the other vehicles after a red light... that's fun, but then I maintain a steady speed with the flow of traffic.

well if you dont mind losing mpg an cruising at a higher rpm on highway then you can add a tooth or two to the rear an gain acceleration

MPG's are all in your right wrist.

But according to that link, a negative percent change will increase my MPG for highway cruising. I think that's what I'd like to do, but are there any other tricks to increase acceleration? I already have a stage 1 kit.

You can either increase acceleration or top speed, not both.
If mpg is what your looking for, you won't get that with acceleration. As Jim said previously, mpg are in your right wrist.
If you want higher mpg, drop a couple teeth on your rear sprocket (don't go crazy with dropping teeth), that will give you a lower rpm at speed, an a higher top speed. But you also need to learn to control that throttle wrist if you want to pull the most mpg you can.

I would love a little more top end. Driving at 80mph with the rpms screaming is annoying.

I know accelerating fast will always lower your MPGs, but when I'm just cruising and not looking for acceleration (which is 93% of the time), that's when I want more MPGs.

I don't need/want any more top speed; infact, I'd have no problem losing some top speed for more acceleration or MPGs (either one!). I'm just less sure about compromising my ability to choose to accelerate fast when I want/need to just for a few more MPGs.
