  • im sure this has been covered but...gearing

ok, i have an '00 600 and found that the physical diameter of the gears were smaller than the stock set i just installed. the old frt spocket has 15t but was smaller(i think) and the rear was a good bit smaller but still had the same amount of teeth.ie: stood the 2 next to each other and was like 1/2+ shorter than the stk size. is this unheard of and what probs would this cause? the chain seems to be of the same width as well.

The only way for that to be right would be for the pitch to be different as far as I can tell.

That's pretty crazy if that's true...

According to the laws of Physical Science..... go back to stock. There's no way your top end is going to be what your bike was designed for.

That what I thought too, one must be a 520 and one a 530.

                      i don't think a 530 chain will fit on a 520 sprocket, and a 520 chain won't fit on a 530 sprocket....

"Fit" is a relative term, you can fit a 530 chain on a 520 sprocket, its just gonna be really ugly

The pitch is the same between a 520, 525, and 530 chain... it's a 5 series pitch at 5/8" between the rollers. The roller widths is what changes between those or how wide the chains are.

The 420, 425, or 428 chains have a pitch of 1/2" between the rollers. This would mean the teeth tips are moved closer together, and thus a smaller diameter for the same tooth count.

And running that pitch on a Katana is why I think it's pretty crazy if it's true.

so if in fact it had a smaller tooth gear on it , that would change the speedo and if so then why?

Yes it would change the speed reading. Reasoning? You don't have a Speedohealer. Even with stock gearing your speed will be slightly off.
