  • Front Wheel replacement options?

At the risk of being ridiculed for asking this quesion....

i have a 2000 600kat, and my front wheel has a slight wobble (less than half an inch) and i only trust it to putter around town and no faster than 50mph. I dont feel any shakes or vibrations in the handle bars, but just the thought of it makes me nervous... the only rim repair shop on island said it was irreparable because one of the spokes are bent, not the wheel
oh, and its only the wheel that has the mystery wobble, rotors are still straight as an arrow

I don't want to spend $180+ for another straight-spoke post wheel... so heres my n00b question... you ready?

Will the front post axle slip into a pre wheel with a proper fit?
or are there any other options for wheels?

    (vid of slight wobble)

The pre wheel is 3 inch wide as opposed to the post's 3.5. I believe the 120 fits on the pre as well but I would check with the manufacturer. Or I sure another member will speak up.

The Pre kats 89-97 and GS500 models have the same front wheel. The hubs for those wheels are the same sizes as the Post kat 98-02 front wheels.

The differences would not effect mounting them at all. Those differences are swept spoke designs and the rim lips are 3" wide instead of a 3.5" like on the post. Generally the same size tire is used though, 120/70s.

I wouldn't ride on that....at freeway speeds (or less) that might become a rather large issue.

yea i dont do any freeway speeds on it.
the friend that gave me the bike used to commute on it about 50miles at freeway speeds on it about 3 years ago. he also said the wheel was bent then too. never gave him any issues.

the bend is so very slight, that i'm going to continue to bum around on it at speeds lower than 45mph until i can find a new wheel

                    There you go.

Oh, and I ran a 120/70 on my pre and it worked out great. Matter of fact, when I decided to try resetting back to the stock 110/70 it didn't handle as well. Get the rim, paint the ugly sucker and spoon your tire right on there. Done.
