  • Converting tire sizes

    Anyone good at this?

I'm considering putting a set on dual sport tires on my pre for the rest of the winter. Almost all of these tires use the old sizing and I have no idea what it means, can you help me out?

    2.50-17, 3.00-17, 4.60-17, 5.10-17

It seems obvious to me that the first 2 are fronts and the last two are rears but I have no idea what will fit without any mods.

The first number is the tire width in inches. The second size is the rim diameter. I ran into this issue when I bought tires for my GS. The tires are never a perfect match, you just need to find the closest that fit the rim.

ALWAYS use the exact tire size, type, speed and load rating recommended by the manufacturer of your motorcycle. Never try to second-guess the designers and engineers with regards to tire size, type, speed or load rating! Use the information on this page for general reference only and not for choosing motorcycle tires.

Do you think the old system is an 80 or a 70 aspect ratio?

O crap I missed the link! Thanks.

          WOW!
This is turning out to be a nightmare without having the tires right in front of me.

          But thanks for the charts.

            OK:

So I measured my tires, the Michelin Pilot Road 2's, 120/70, 150/70 and
            they are 4.75w x 3.00h front and 6.00w x 3.00h rear.

Would you go with a 4.60-17 front and a 5.10-17 rear?

We are talking stock rims here.

I don't know if there 90 or 82 series and if they are a square profile I think that would make the tires to tall, right?

I probably should have measured the circumference, that would have answered a couple of questions since I want them to fit under the front fender too.

Hey guys, I am thinking about putting a 190 on the back of my stock 2001 Katana 600. Is this possible? (I know nothing about maintenance, just riding) If not, what do I need to do? Also, what are the pros and cons of having a bigger tire on the back?

Why the mean look? You guys have to understand...I am 24 and this is my first sportsbike I have ever had. I asked your advice because I need it, not to be a jerk. If you could provide me with an explanation I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

The "no comment" is because we get about 2-3x's of that question per week.

This forum has all kinds of great info, and this has been covered before. The best suggestion is to search through the forums here for answers, then ask in a new post if you can't find the answer you're looking for. Many times, if someone knows of a discussion that you may not have found, they will provide a link to it. Like Steve did.

                      Happy researching!
                      Cheers.

Again, apologies. New here, new to the game, I'll look harder next time. However, I would prefer to not get clowned on every time I ask a question, but instead get directed to the appropriate thread (like Steve graciously did). Thanks.

Use the google site search for your searching needs, not the crappy built in vbulletin search. It should show up right under the vbulletin search when you check the search box.

                              Well it's warming up,
the now is starting to melt,
and my deal for an extra set of rims fell through.

Looks like I'm putting my dual sport tire thing on hold for a bit.
But thanks for the links and help.
