    Re: 1991 750 Kat

I have a new set of braided lines that were given to me - made by CycleFlex (I think it's part of Russell)
The lines are a few years old.
They have a label on the box and on each of the 3 lines that reads -
"For Off Road or Competiton use Only - Not for street use"

Should I avoid using these lines?

braided brake lines? why would you avoid them?
90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

Based on the labels that state - For Off Road Use or Competition Only - Not for street Use.

Why would they put those labels on the kit?

OK, so you are saying it is OK to use them despite the labels?

they ALL say that. That's so you can't sue them when you mess up.

Because they're not DOT certified I would imagine, dont all braided kits have those warnings?

It is a disclaimer to keep companies from getting sued when you grab a handful of brake and go over the handle bars.

                      +1

It also means that their product lines don't have to repeatedly be sent out for DOT-compliance testing every time they come up with a new brake line for a different (newer) model bike.

If the brand isn't good, word will spread like wild-fire.

Now, all that said, if the lines are over 5 years old, don't use them -- just like tires, the rubber inside will still have aged & cracked and lost it's VOC's that keep it pliable.

                      Cheers,

steel braided brake lines don't have rubber, they are teflon, no VOC's

                          That is manufacturer/brand dependent.

Do your homework before you plunk down your cash... or change your brake lines every five years anyway, because no matter what the material is, the repeated flexing of the lines as the forks compress will cause them to weaken & want to crack over time

                              Cheers,
