  • My long ride this year, Edmonton to Vancouver to Seattle

This is the long haul me and a friend are planning to do this year from June 1 to June 10th. We'll be spending the first night in Vernon BC, then a couple of days in Vancouver and a few days in Seattle. We'll just be taking in the sights and ridding around before heading back. I'm pretty pumped, I got a corbin seat last year, a tail bag, a new jacket, and a new battery, I'm also going to get new tires before the trip. Anyone have any tips for long rides? this will be the longest trip I've ever done.

Have cash available (credit card/debit card) in case you blow a tire, vapor lock a piston, crack a case cover etc. Long distance rides can get pricey.

Good luck, and give us a ride report with plenty of pics!

Pack a Leatherman, a set of sockets, etc. A little more than your basic toolkit.
Wear a Camelbak and keep sipping at the water.
Install a cruise control or at least a throttle lock/crampbuster.
Get a pair of handheld radios and helmet speaker/microphone setups or go big with an intercom/wireless comm system. It's nice to be able to communicate with your riding buddy and you can pipe in some music when you feel like it.
Schedule your meal breaks. Don't wait until you're starving before looking for a place to eat. Helps if you pack some munchies in the tankbag, too.
Stop before you're tired. Keeps the trip more fun that way. I like camping when I travel so it helps if I stop while it's still light outside.

Hit the Touring 411 section. I'm sure most of these (if not all) are already in there.

bring rain gear... you're probably going to need it!
and carry an extra key... just in case.

and always remember it'll probably take you two hours longer than expected to get anywhere.

Oh!! And don't forget about BC's new 40 over law - they WILL impound on site.
the kat may be the gixxer's retarded cousin, but she's a hefty broad... and i do loves me some girth between my thighs.

Sounds like if you get tagged at 40 OVER the posted limit, you lose your scoot.

I got a ticket in BC last August, I don't think I was 40km/h over, but I probably wasn't too far off. Yeesh.

Ugh thats balls. Sure speeding is speeding but an automatic impound seems a bit harsh for only 40 over.

it's their whole 'stopping street racing' BS
if you're only doing 150 on the highway, you're not racing.
if you're doing 90 in a 50 zone, sure... take the vehicle away.
