  • My First "Long" Trip

    Hey everyone,

So i'm taking my first long trip this weekend (long relatively). I'm only going a little over 100 miles round trip but in the past four months i've been riding it's been a lot of tooling around town or short 10 miles trips.

This trip is taking me from Long Island, NY up to Chappaqua, NY.

My question is, are there any extra precautions I should be taking or things I should be checking besides the obvious (tire air pressure, gas, oil level, chain?)

Thanks for any help, I'm really excited about this trip. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

Air pressure, oil level, and chain are good ones. lube up that chain before u leave. Otherwise, good luck.

Something to drink, and make sure your cell phone is charged if you have one.

        Cell phone.
Let someone know your route in case battery dies etc.
Some cash and rain gear should you run into a rain storm.
Small tool kit for quick fixes.
        Drink and granola bar.

Rain gear this weekend might be a big + depending on what happens with Hurricane Earl.

I have been caught in 2 down pours in the last few weeks. It started out clear and sunny, not a cloud in the heavens and then........WHAM! Pacific Ocean right out of the sky.........I will always have something to make cover from now on - got drenched both times...lol.

Just the stuff you should be checking before you get on the bike anytime. 100 miles is really nothing for the bike, although it may be for you.

Went out today bought a small tool kit, tire patches, and new chain wax. Looks like the weather should hold out, fingers crossed. Who knows with these weathermen. It's the only job where you can be 100% wrong and still get paid...

All of the suggestions tabled already were really good. One thing I would suggest is a spare key. Based on a recent experience, I now always have one ..... trust me on that one.

+1 on the spare key...I need a spare right now since I broke the last on off in the ignition.

Can I just got to a locksmith and have a new key made from the existing or does it have to be done specially?
