Homemade Luggage rack for pre 600

I was out looking at the bike, trying to figure out how to mount a rack to it when an idea struck me. Can i just take off the rear grab bar and mount a rack (one that I will make myself) in the holes where that is currently mounted? Will that be strong enough?

Renntec make a fantastic luggage rack that replaces the rear grab rail and extends out over the rear light. Look at their design and see what you think. It could be worth basing your design on theirs.

This worked great for me on 2 seperate 3500 mile road trips. Hard cased suitcase and a ratchet strap. The whole setup costs about 50 dollars and can be taken on and off in 30 seconds
