I want to take the opportunity to share a positive Kat experience.
I have taken the Kat to work a few times the past two weeks and I have nothing but good things to say. After adjusting the valves (and at the same time fixing a leaky valve cover gasket), repairing and adjusting carbs and repair firings (thanks to member 92xjunker), My 89 750 Kat runs like a new bike.
I mean it. With over 41,000 miles (and not maintained well by at least one previous owner), the engine is silky smooth. No weird noised whatsoever. She starts at the touch of the starter button. I keep saying "this is the year I get a new (to me at least) commuter bike, but the more I bring this much abused Kat from nearly dead the more I love it.
