Fuel Knob and Petcock???

I have a 91 Katana 750 and can't make out on the faring which the direction the fuel knob should be in... As you look at it, Up, Right Left or down? Can someone help. Also I know there is a screen filter in the petcock but can I also put in line filters between petcock and carbs?
