  • What's a normal idle RPM for a kat?

I just recently acquired a 2002 Kat 600 and when the engine is all warm after riding for a bit, it idles at around 2500 rpm. Like at stop lights and stuff. Is that a normal idle speed for a warm engine on a katana? It seems just a little high compared to my old bike, but that was a 1989 Ninja so I don't really know how to compare them.

Also, what grade of fuel do you guys put in? My old ninja required 92 octane, but the previous owner of my kat said that he just put in 87 and it was fine. Thoughts?

Thanks, sorry I'm still a noob with the Katana stuff

    87 octane, 1100 - 1400 rpm
90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

How would I go about lowering the idle RPM speed, what could be the cause of a high idle?

dirty carbs, vacuum leaks, air leaks, improper equiptment, fuel in oil (associated with dirty carbs generally)...

Well I think first you should find out if the issue is with something else other than changing idling speed. I would check what Krey suggested then move on to adjusting idle ONCE everything else checks out. No point in putting a "band-aid" over it, might as well fix it! Btw, did you get a service manual for the Kat? There is an idle adjuster on the left side of the bike, black little knob you can turn. Check by your left knee position. Also, service manual is a great investment!
