hello am doin the first oil change on my kat since i have it striped down and all, it has probably been asked before but am curently at work so i dont really have time to search trough posts, what oil should i go with and what oil filter should i use for a 1999 kat gsx600f. thanks

It is recommended that you use only JASO rated oil rated at 10w-40 over heavier. If I recall, I used a Fram filter and everything is okay so far. But, it is recommended that you go OEM. Kats especially don't like K&N filters.

motorcycleanchor.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, motorcycleanchor.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

Pretty sure that the info there is more than you need to make your decision. I use a NAPA filter because according to the wiki article it is similar enough to OEM. Cost $10 though. Also, I use Rotella T6 in 5w-40 because it is cheap. There are plenty of posts on it. The search function works relatively well here.

Kats don't like K&N AIR FILTERS. The oil filter is fine.

Not a chance in hell. Wait for the next 5 posts this month about some guy who has a K&N and wonders why his bike won't run right. I must say though, I'm seeing those threads less and less often. Which is a good thing.

Eww, lol. Not tough enough for me. Hope you consider a different brand next time.

+1 one to the guy suggesting NAPA. I personally use a WIX Filter (Part# 51359.. same as the NAPA. Metal cap instead of the cheap cardboard Fram. As for oil, I change mine more often than probably necessary, can't hurt it though. I last used Valvoline motorcycle brand 10-40, was around 6.xx a quart and the best I could find at midnight on a sunday. #walmart.

Just changed my Kat's oil yesterday before the ride after putting it back together.
Got Napa filter, but they didnt have any oil cept that purple high $ junk.
Went to bike store, ugh, got some 10w-40. Total cost = $30 +tax.

FYI: Guy at napa tried to sell me the K&N filter and i was already shakin my head.
Advanced Auto ONLY had FRAM filters and even LESS oil selections.

Which brings the question: Wheres the best place for selection for Motorcycle oils ??
Auto stores only carried two kinds..all HIGH $$.
The bike shops carried two kinds.
Does retail places like wallyworld carry a larger selection!?
((I despise the local bike shop...altho the harley parts guy said he could order ANYTHING for me .. LOL ))

I always use Fram PH6018 oiil filters and Castrol 10w40 motorcycle oil for all my oil changes. I change the filter with each oil change too since the Fram is almost half the price of the OEM. I did so on the Kat, and I do it on the SFV now too. That reminds me, I am due.

Here in Brasil all riders use FRAM PH6018 and mineral oil 20w50 API.SL Jasoma ( Yamalube, Mobil, Castrol, Lubrax - very good oil made by Petrobras ) in all old Suzuki bikes changing always oil and filter less than 3.000 Km.
I never saw any problem with this filter or demage and its used in high temperatures during the summer temperature in the street here its more than 40°C

Seems like the most recommended oil on this site is Mobil Racing 4T and I have never seen that at less than $9 a quart (even that price is rare). There are some that recommend what I use (may even be the second most recommended on this site ), the Rotella T6 stuff. At Wally World it's $20 a gallon. And then HardlyDangerous recommends no less than Amsoil or Class IV and up oils which are also pricey. I say do your research and make your decision .

For an off the shelf oil go with the Racing 4t, usually around $10/quart.

If you want the best, get Amsoil.

Again, there is nothing wrong with a K&N OIL filter - in fact, they are good gear, and the nut makes changing them so simple.
