exchangeing front forks or something? what doesn't need so much modifications

I'm sure you'll get several different opinions, but without doing major modifications, you can improve the front suspension by getting new springs to match your weight, perhaps a heavier weight fork oil, and emulators, if you are so inclined. For brakes, most upgrade to stainless braided hoses, which will provide a much firmer feel, along with some good aftermarket pads. Naturally, you can spend all sorts of money on an usd fork conversion, 6 pot calipers etc, but it will still be a Katana, and not some hyper SS bike that could benefit from those mods.

Proper springs, oil, and emulators is the best bang for the buck without major mods and $. Even if you did the major mods and $, you would not end up with that much better than proper springs, oil, and emulators.

If you want flashy, then the USD forks will come in, but... they will need to be adjusted with the proper springs, oil, and adjustments anyways.

Versah HH pads with stainless braided lines with a properly working stock master and calipers (if they are older, you might need to simply do a rebuild on them to clean and replace the rubber inside) will make doing stoppies stupid easy on a kat. That's more than enough stopping power.
