  • Gas mileage and Winter Gas

I'm pretty good about checking my gas mileage every time I fill up. It's surprisingly consistent. 43 miles per gallon. I also know that they change the make up of gasoline in the spring and fall. They use a lot of butane in the winter because it's cheap and they can't use it in the summer because it will evaporate out of the gasoline.

Anyway, the fill up before last I got 45 MPG. It thought, no big deal maybe I just got a little extra in the tank during the previous fill up. They are small tanks and a little bit will change your mileage a bunch. Well, this fill up I got 46. I haven't changed my riding habits.

I always thought winter gas was worse for mileage. Any ideas?

Unless you're measuring every cc of gas, your numbers are inaccurate enough to not be worried.

if you have a smart phone down load a gas buddy app. keep track of your exact mileage and gallons down to the point. Also clearly shows what brands of fuel give you the best bang for your buck and best mileage.

Here in Canada I average 49 mpg, best was 52.1 mpg, worst was 42mpg.
Ive also found the Shell fuels give me by far the best mileage and best performance

Is it possible that you went from E10 to non ethanol fuel? Winter fuel will almost always drop mileage 10%.

        Just because they sound the same doesn't mean they are: there≠their≠they're; to≠too≠two; its≠it's; your≠you're; know≠no; brake≠break

I dont know what you guys have in your gas but it sucks ballz. I get about 55 mpg doing commute / twisties / two up regardless of it being E10 or not. and I have never had issues with ethanol blends clogging my carbs.

None ethanol is the way to go especially if you bike will be setting and not driven much. It should improve you mileage too.

I have put about 16k miles on my 600 and i figure that i average about 52mpg during that time, regardless of what gas i use. I calculate mpg almost every tank fill (weird).
I have rode through the Adirondacks 2up a couple of times - saddlebags, top box and got 55mpg - rode gently.
Riden from Albany to Buffalo 2up, fully loaded anywhere from 80 - 90 mph and got about 42mpg - this is my worst ever.
Best ever mileage was 59mpg (based on about 100miles).
I tend to ride on the slower side, most of my gear changes are around 3-4K and i very rarely go over 5K rpm. As i get older, i find i am slowing down more

Also, i check tire pressure on a regular basis.

Everyone's figured MPG is off and will differ from others because everyone here hasn't put a speedo healer on your already off and incorrect reading speedometer... which is where your getting variable and incorrect actual milage readings from.

                    Jus sayn...

I can get in the 40's if I'm riding nicely, but that doesn't happen often.

You aren't converting to metric miles, are you?

I think IMP gallons are bigger than US aren't they? that would explain his extra miles. I normally average 50mpg (US gallons) on my '90 600 Kat as long as I am just cruising at a mellow pace (shifting at 6k rpm or lower) or highway cruising in 6th. If I am riding hard, bumping the limiter on straights between the corners on mountain roads, my mileage drops to 35mpg or less.

with no speedo healer my numbers are between 35mpg worst and 50mpg best. the 35 mpg was at the rally and i averaged 38mpg with gear, bags and doing 90-100mph for 18hrs on interstate going to and from the rally. i get around 50ish commuting.
