I've got one that attaches with magnets, and in 8 years of use it has not damaged anything. The most important things are to make sure that the top of the tank is clean every time you put the bag on, and to do the same with the bottom of the bag each time as well.
Coincidently i saw one in the stealership yesterday...it had a big warning tag attached to it stating that the magnets have been known to damage the paint. Especially metallic type paints. It also warned about not leaving it on the bike for long periods in the sun (high heat)....I could certainly understand mechanical damage from dust/dirt getting under it and then vibrations causing scuffs etc....
I have an Oxford tank bag with magnets and love it, clean the tank before putting the bag on the tank and NEVER set the bag on the ground because some dirt will stick to the bag and will scratch the tank.
Yeah what everyone else said....I just put my bag on and off the bike really easy. I also store my bag upside down so dirt and crap doesn't get on the magnets.
This "Phat Chick" rides her own!!! BTW, I think they may have been correct. It does appear that BLACKis indeed the FASTEST color. R.O.R...R.I.P.M
i scratched my tank just yesterday with my magnetic tank bag. a window point was stuck to the bottom and i didn't realize it until i stopped for gas and saw a pretty nasty scratch. needless to say i was pretty pi$$ed at myself for not checking the bag before i put it on.
