  • finally home!!!

so, I got home 2 days ago and started digging into the basketcase '89 600 my wife had acquired for me while I was in afghanistan. Got the battery charged and hokked it up, ripped the flex-pipe and cherrybomb off(yes, it had a cherrybomb on it), bought new sparkplugs, (not installed yet), and cleaned the wheels. sounds like a good welcome home, right?

after i installed the battery and tried to start it, it would turn over, but wouldn't fire. the seller told my wife i HAD to change the plugs, but he fired it up right in front of her with the plugs that are currently in it. could it be that it was a result of removing the exhaust.... oh well, i'll figure it out.... i'll be posting a lot of pictures soon, so stay posted!

Check the choke, and make sure the petcock isn't sitting in prime.

Sounds like a lot of backyard engineering to me...

Put it together right, and things will be easier for you in the long run.

welcome back bro... and thanks for serving

cant believe the bike actually had a cherry bomb on it, haha

check the choke cable... and if its been sitting for a while, the carb bowls might need cleaned... sometimes it just takes alot of choke and throttle to get the bike goin

I know the petcock has 3 positions: pri, res, run.... only problem is bike is naked so i've got nothing to go on as far as the right position....

last night i bought a shorty exhaust for it (actually for an r6) whith a midpipe..... works out well because i dont have one, and if it dont fit, i got access to a pipe bender. And, got it for $23 total!

I'll check the choke cable today as well.

Welcome home, Bro! Thanks for your service. Dont know what to say about the bike, other than it is secondary to you returning safely.

ok, so dont turn it to prime?

i heard it dumps to much gas in the carbs....

Should normally be in the ON position. Never leave it on prime for more than 30 seconds when the bike is not running.

You might want to save some cash (spark plugs) and time and aggravation.

Go ahead and pull the carbs now. Find the CARB 101 post here on KR, clean the carbs, get 'em straight...then try firing it up.

Welcome home and thank you for your service. A good carb cleaning is a good idea, no way to tell how long it sat before you got it. The carbs probably look wonderful inside right now. Carbs 101.

thank you all for the kind words. btw, the last time the bike was ran was only about 3 weeks ago. i didn't see it though, due to the fact that i was in afghanistan when she went to pick it up for me. so i know it should still run. replaced plugs today, it needed it very badly as they looked like they were a couple years old....

might also want to check your inline fuel filter... been a few time when i was troubleshooting a bike for days on end, and the damn fuel filter was clogged
