  • Engine I.D.

    Hi;
    I just got a 91 750 Kat, for $350 plus $20 for delivery!!!!

    I already have the same bike, so this was for parts.
    It is mostly complete, but was down on its right.
    No RH mirror, brake lever end ground down, muffler has a flat spot.
    The bar-end is gone.
    The footpeg is missing, the bracket for it is cracked.
    I took the fairings off and the engine looks great.
    The covers are like new, shiny black, no scrapes.

    What I would like to know is - how do I tell if this is a replacement engine?
    How can I tell the displacement?

    I have never slid a bike. but it seems that the covers should be beat-up.
    Is the VIN on the engine somewhere?
    I have the title, but will not register it as it would cost too much to make rideable.

    Mostly I wanted the carbs and electrical stuff.
    The rotors look and feel new not worn at all, the rear tire still has nubbies on it.
    The odometer says 10K miles.

    Displacement is stamped on the motor... either on the left side, or the right side just above the oil fill depending on year.

      Thanks Krey;
      The V.I.N. plate and triple tube stamp are are same as the title.

      The engine has "SUZUKI" above the oil fill hole,"3800 ml" oil capacity.
      And R712-12xxxx stamped into the casting.

      This is different than the VIN which is JS1GR78A6M21xxxxx

      Does this mean the engine was swapped?
      Does the R712 mean 750? (or hopefully 1200)

        The first two digits "R7" mean it is definitely a 750cc 4 cylinder. "12" is the design sequence, but I don't know what years correspond to that. At the bottom of the cylinder block on one side it should say either "748" or "749" for your displacement. 748's are the short stroke 750's (like the 89-97 katana 750, or the 88-89 GSXR750's) and the 749's are long stroke 750's (98+ katana 750, 85-87&90-91 GSXR750)

          The engine # and the Vin# are not related.

          As Krey said, the displacement is stamped on the cylinder head, you'll likely need to remove the plastics to check that.

          On the Pre750, what you want to look for are the markings on the intake side of the motor "S1" "S2" or "S3" It may actually be a GSXR motor (S1, or S2).
