Well I've been making progress on my bike over the last 2 weeks. So far I've got my new subframe welded in, rearset mounts welded in and the front end installed. I've learned quite a bit about this conversion (03 gix 600 front end, 04 750 swingarm, 06 1000 shock etc..). When I'm finished I'm going to do a write up about it with blueprints and critical measurements so it will be MUCH easier for the next guy. Essentially there is a @#$&! load of machining to do, nothing fits but it can be done. To make the front end work you need to machine a custom stearing stem and nuts, (early year gix stem might be an option but from what I hear you still need to machine/weld it) machine the lock, weld in a new lock slot on the neck, weld in new stearing stops, fab a steering stabilizer mount and respring the forks (they're rediculously undersprung for katana weight). Oh and you need to machine or buy new clip-ons. Other than that it's a direct bolt-in 01 und up gix swingarm will work with offset bushings and fabbing new shock mounts (have done it with an 02 1000 swingarm but changing to a black powdercoated 04 750 arm). Everthing has been purchased at this point (new exhaust, dyna ignition, k&n, carb rebuilt & jet kit, 04 1000 wheels mounted with new pilot sports, f4i brakes, rk 520 w/vortex sprockets, all body panels w/solo cowl, FOUND A PLACE THAT MAKES BLUE CHROME DECALS and a replacement 750 engine. Here's a pic of the bike at work in my cube (Engineer/r&d machinist, build it after hours). I'm expecting it to be done in 3 weeks

Just don't be buying my "wicked" kit from alloutgraphics, OK? I already HAVE them in blue chrome, and have started the install....using the same kit just wouldn't be original enough, especially since we're both gonna be on somewhat 'modified' Katanas.FrankenKat 1216

I looked into that but I've got 45mm tubes and there's none that size in old school triples that I'm aware of. I got the front end as a whole anyways so I wanted to use it all. The other thing is I wanted to use gsxr1000 wheels and the front with 600 rotors is a direct bolt-in to these forks. Didn't want to use other forks and have possible fitment issues there. Really it only took 3 hrs to machine up the stem and nuts anyways...

Pics of the build are somewhat limited at this point - my digital camera got destroyed last fall, and I've yet to get another one - in the meatime I've been trying to get by with the crappy pics from my mp3 player....
Today I put a few more decals on, and I'll try to get some pics of the cowl - the dark blue chrome on black paint looks WICKED (no pun intended)...So far, there's been a few screwups on mine - got the wrong rotors first off, and had to send them back....now I can't seem to get the hugger mounted straight - it seems impossible to get it centered over the tire AND at a reasonable height off the tire at the same time - the only way to do requires outside pressure applied in ways that the three bolts can not supply - so I'm gonna have to screw with that some more.....Then there's the problem of getting everything back together - I've never had a bike down to this level of "stripped" before, so the build could be interesting, to say the least!
I'll see about getting some more pics of those decals....Right now I'm fighting with my plastics, trying to get the bloody mesh mod to stick, so it could be a couple hours.FrankenKat 1216

ok, so I got impatient...
This camera sucks, and will NOT show the color of these decals properly....so don't expect anything great....
In any case, here's something I've never seen on a Kat before... I figured they were worth the $3/each
Sorry for bad pics...I'll try to go out and get a REAL camera next weekend....FrankenKat 1216

Ha That's a funny mirror decal! Never seen that one before. I'm going black with blue chrome as well, 2 S decals on the tank, 750 on the tail and katana on the upper fairings. Now I need to find someone to paint the body (cant beleave how much they want just to spray the damn thing). Well I just found out I have a broken engine mount and a busted oil pan on my replacement motor (get what you pay for I guess, perhaps thats why it was so cheap) I just sold a pan for like $10 not to long ago too. Oh well I might convert to a late model katana engine if my carbs and exhaust will bolt up (the early year 750's had weak trannys and beleave the changed the design on the later models). I was going to take some summer classes this year but looks like I'll be canceling those and working some o.t. to pay for the growing expenses of this project It will be mint when I'm done thou...

I have a complete '03 600 engine if you're looking for a late-model powerplant....I know it's no 750, but it's there in case you can't find any other replacements. Carbs and coils are with it....I just took it out about three weeks ago - the only thing I can't provide is the harness.
Just a thought!FrankenKat 1216
