Rear shock settings

Ok, I see in my shop manual suggested settings for preload and damping. But, what about compression , the little knob under the right side of the seat?
There is a range of 0-20 settings. What are some suggested settings?

I have mine set just a few clicks from full soft.. The suspension will pack if there's too much compression damping. I've tried 20 clicks and it's not a pleasant ride, at least for me.
