  • ? about 530 chain and sprokets

I have seen kits to change to the smaller chain and sprokets, any likes dislikes? I will be needing a chain and sprokets soon and just seeing if others have done the conversion. Thanks Clip

General concensus on here seems to be that the reason for the 530 chain on the Kat is due to the heavy weight of the bikes compared to the lightweight SS's. Going to a 520 may cause the chain and sprockets to either wear out prematurely, or completely fail and break because of the increased load that the 520 chain was not designed to handle.

he was asking about the 530...not the 520.
and the stock chain is a 532, not 530.
however, the .002 difference is not significant enough to worry about, and a 530 kit will cost you a good 30-40% less than a 532, which is a special order from a dealer. it can even be 50% cheaper by converting.

go with a 530 kit. even a "responsible" dealership will suggest the same thing.

Oh, I'm sorry, I saw 530, then smaller chain, and thought he was referring to the 520. Didn't know the 1100 had the 532 on it. I agree a 530 should be fine if it had the 532 stock.

          honest mistake

and ya....the kat had an oddball chain/sprocket size. however, you can run a 530 chain on a 532 sprockets. I have done it.

That sounds possible, considering my brand new 530 chain seems to have about .015-.020 clearance on the new sprockets.

Sprockets are cheep and if your chain is worn out then your sprockets are or will be soon. 530 is the way to go.
