We have some very washboard freeways here in Seattle.
The concrete has worn down so much that the steel expansion joints across the freeway stick up about an inch.
Relax, stay loose and put more weight on your feet.
Let the bars dance in your hands, or you will bite your tongue off.
(Locco that would be "the balls of your feet")
I always cover the brake and clutch.
In fact when I am at the grocery store I do the same thing with the grocery cart.
Outside two fingers on the cart handle, inner two on the metal basket.
It's good practice and builds finger strength.
Squeeze the inner fingers firmly and smoothly do not jerk or you will lock the front.
Always use the front and rear brakes together everytime.
Downshift too.

Good tips! I always assume the cage driver will do the wrong thing, thus left-turners in oncoming traffic are expected to cut in front as if I weren't there, and cars at stop signs at intersections are looking to see whether there are any CARS, not to see whether there is ANYTHING coming, thus, a bike equals no CAR, so they'll proceed into the path of the bike as a blind person would and are always surprised there was a bike, with a human aboard, there.
