  • digital clock wiring

So I bought this digital clock/volt meter/temp but its not saving the time after I turn it off. Is there a certain place I can plug it into so it saves the time but doesn't kill my battery?

The battery. It uses power, so unless you are going to supply a second battery, use the main. Put in an appropriate inline fuse and wire it to the battery. There might be a closer spot in the harness; my bike has an lcd clock so I know that's one spot in the harness that is always energized. But depending on how much power the unit drains, a fuse gives you a way to easily disconnect it when storing the bike for extended durations.

It's worth noting that I've not done this myself, so it is more suggestion than fact. Hope that gets you headed in the right direction.

Just use your multimeter to find a wire that is producing the voltage you need while the bike is turned off or wire it all the way back to the battery.

Purchase a secondary small rechargeable battery.

Connect it so that it always provides power to the clock, but power to the secondary battery from your primary system is only when the key is on.

This will make the bike recharge the battery when running, but not effect the bikes battery when off.

Then again, if your running just a clock... a normal watch battery might be enough for a good year or 2 of use with out needing rechargeable.

What kind of small recharchable battery should I get that I can place conveniently somewhere on my bike? And what's the proper way to hook it up from the primary, just pos-pos, neg-neg, anything special?

I would be wary of hooking it up directly to the battery. Just get a small stick on clock for time, or a cheap waterproof wrist watch on the bars.

Well I already have this 3 in 1 setup, id kinda like to use it. I like the idea of a secondary battery that gets charged from the primary but what would be the proper way to connect them?

The two battery setup is a great idea, but a little complicated. How much juice does it use? I can tell you how to figure out the device's current draw if unpublished, and I can help you do the current draw calculations if you need. If it takes 6 months to drain a fully charged battery, I wouldn't think it would be worth the trouble to rig up a secondary battery. (Though it is an EXCELLENT idea for how to drive an amp and speakers for the Boom Bike). It's passive sensors right?

The second rechargable battery system seems a little over complex to me

Plus if it includes a volt meter won't it be reading off the second battery then and not the main battery?

connect it up and see how long the battery lasts...you might be surprised, most clocks use mirco amps...

Except the clock drawing the battery down has been a problem on motorcycles since the beginning.
