No crank with start button?

Just bought an 01 750 that has the fairings, headlight and gauges pulled off. The po is telling me that because of all that disconnected is the reason it won't start with the starter button. I will crank when the solenoid is jumped. Is this correct or do I have another problem in it. I haven't had time to get into it much yet.

ya if the wires a not hooked up it wont start with the button. this sounds lik the exact same situation as i bought my kat. i did some rewiring and cleaning and it runs.

Do you know if this applies to the pre-kats as well? i have my fairings off so that i can clean it up while i am working on it and i have had the same problem. The motor will turn when i jump the solenoid but will not turn over using the starter button.

yes it does, I had a brain fart when I asked that but the headlight is on the starter circuit as I remember on most bikes. That way if you're burned out it's not supposed to be ridden.
