ok...pulled the fairing and windscreen off today....the wiring all looked good; didn't check the tank sending unit...ran outta time; but once one of the side fairings is off, does the tank come off pretty easy? (hidden bolts anywhere?)
I finally looked around in the gas tank, and the sending unit is definitely rusted out; anybody know where I can get one for a better price than the stealership???

Is there rust in the tank as well? If so, I would suggest using the electrolysis method to clean both. It may start working agian.
Used one's on ebay I'm sure can be had for cheaper, or from someone here on the boards.
Parts missing?... I don't see how only that component could be in such a condition, without there also being significan't rust or problems with the tank as well.
Unless the tank and sending unit are from 2 different bikes. I guess that could be possible. The PO swapped the tank, choose not to swap the sending unit.
Pics of it would be a great help, but I still say it's possible it could be salvaged. Don't throw it away if you do, and post some pics. If nothing else, I might be interested in trying to save it, and will cover shipping if your cool with that (if it looks like it can be).
alright, I put in a new sending unit today, and the fuel gauge works; the only question I have is...I had about a quarter tank it, and when I started the bike, it took about a minute for the gauge to read that it had that much; the needle slowly creeped up to the quarter tank mark...is that normal, or should it snap up to the level pretty quickly???
rode the bike around today, even though it was cold as balls, but the fuel gauge seemed to work fine; thanks for all the help/suggestions/advice fellas, much appreciated
