no start with button

ok had this problem and figured it was solenoid. replaced it today same shiz. can jump solenoid over and fires right up . no hack job wiring as i got the bike in pieces and harness was still fully intact. so how do the clutch and kickstand switches work ? are they normaly open or closed switches? any conectors inline that i can jumper to rule out one or the other ? bike is post 98. thanks
