  • Katana Start/Idle Issues

I am having some issues with my 03 Katana 600, it starts a little hard (full choke required, even if it's 115 out and the bike is in the sun) and the idle is a bit bouncy (varies by ~300 RPM). On Accel, RPM hangs for a second before dropping down. When cold, the bike idles a little low (~1000 RPM). When hot, such as after a 20min ride, the idle climbs to 2500-3500.

The bike is new (to me). 13k Miles on the Odometer, previous owner had the carbs rebuilt right before purchase. Factory air filter in place, as is the factory exhaust. No gas in crankcase, did a vacuum leak test by spraying carb cleaner anywhere rubber met metal, and across all vacuum hoses. Didn't find a leak.

Gas mileage also seems low (approx 25-30 city).

Anyone have any ideas as to what's up with this thing? It's driving me nuts!

That's your problem right there, I can almost guarantee they did quickie clean the bowls out and that was about it. Full choke is a side effect of the pilot circuits being plugged.

Download carbs 102 and clean them again, or PM Arsenic, he's the carb guru here, he can take care of you if carb work is not something you want to get into.

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured... Was hoping to not have to pull the carbs till getting to ride it more, but at this point I should probably go reverse-engineer all the stuff done by the PO. Trust but verify. lol

And unfortunately arsenic doesn't appear to have any 600 carbs available at the moment Or at least not in the ebay storefront haha.

Anyone have a good source for the carb boot o-rings (between carb and head)? May as well get a new set if I gotta pull 'em anyway.

Yeah I do, they aren't done. I just got the parts today. If you want a set I can have them done in a week tops.

Hey duder, how goes it? I got a set of 98-06 600 carbs with OEM jetting done. I list them in my eBay "storefront" as soon as I'm not feeling lazy.
