  • How to replace the valve seals

    Hey fellow kat riders.

I noticed when I start my bike up, I get a few puffs of blue smoke that dissipates after a minute, and my research has lead me to the valve seals being shot. First question is, is this something I can do myself (fairly engine savvy) and the second question is, should I do it or have it done at a shop?

Do you have access to a leak down tester? That should help you understand for sure if that's the case without having to pull the motor apart.

this isn't really my area of expertise.

So, the leak down would tell you for sure if the leak is past a valve or if it's rings.

A leak down test is not required unless your valves are burnt out or damaged I call it a compression test done dry then wet "With oil" to look for compression loss .As to replace the seals I dunno.
I did wonder if they can be don't insitu using the piston at TDC and use a tool to compress the valve and remove the colletts to get the valve spring off and replace the seal.
I have never worked on the Kats so I carn't help...sorry.
